MMIW Saskatchewan Indigenous Women Story

Krista’s Kilometres for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW)

Krista Fox a 54-year-old grandmother from North Battleford, Saskatchewan currently making her way across Canada to raise awareness for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women. Krista began her journey on February 5th in Prince George, British Columbia. Over the next nine months, Krista will be making her way across Canada and completing her journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Krista’s goal is to bring awareness to the severity of this human rights crisis that is surrounding MMIW and to generate more resources to bring our sisters home. Krista hopes to see the numbers of MMIW decrease, and for Indigenous women to repossess their rightful power and respect.

On June 3, 2019, the Final Report from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was released. In that report, the Inquiry made 231 Calls for Justice. It also concluded that the acts of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people in Canada constitutes “genocide.”

Krista has helped to raise awareness in the past few years in honour of her friend Diane Morin, who is also currently on the journey with her. Diane’s daughter Ashley Morin went missing in 2018. Ashley was last seen on July 10, 2018, and since then RCMP has announced her disappearance as a homicide. Morin’s family is still searching for answers and currently has a reward of $20K for information that may help solve Ashley’s case.

Krista is currently on route to pass through her hometown of North Battleford in the next few days, and while the weather conditions have not always been in their favour, we are sure the love and support she will be receiving from the community when she arrives will be just what she and the team need to feel the love, support, and encouragement to complete the journey.

Krista’s journey can be followed on her Facebook page as well as her TikTok account.

It will cost $11.75 for every KM for Krista to walk across Canada. Krista currently has a GoFundMe page set up to help raise funds for her initiative.

Good Luck Krista we are with you all the way!
