Raven Reads to Donate Books to Indigenous Youth Literacy Programs

Raven Reads to Donate Books to Indigenous Youth Literacy Programs

BC-based Indigenous small business to donate children’s books to regional programs

KAMLOOPS, December 26, 2020 -- Raven Reads Books Ltd., a quarterly subscription box service featuring literature and goods from Indigenous authors and entrepreneurs, is excited to announce a new impact initiative for Indigenous youth beginning in January 2021.

Since it’s inception in 2017, Raven Reads has gained a following of over 1,400 subscribers from all walks of life, both within Canada and around the world.  Métis Founder and CEO, Nicole McLaren, sees her company's success as an opportunity to share the voices and stories of her community with young readers.

McLaren, notes that “while our adult box significantly contributes back to the Indigenous economy through the purchase and distribution of goods made and sold by Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs, we wanted our children’s box to have a notable impact as well.”

Starting in January 2021, for every new children’s subscription sold, Raven Reads will donate one children’s book to various charities across Turtle Island (the traditional name of North America) that support literacy development amongst Indigenous youth.

“Indigenous peoples in Canada continuously score below the national average in literacy rates. Often, this is a direct result of lack of access to resources, and we can begin to help solve this one book at a time.”

Raven Reads subscribers receive a quarterly box containing Indigenous authored books, personal care items and goods, personally curated by McLaren.  Children’s boxes are appropriate for ages 9 and under, while adult subscription boxes are recommended for ages 18 and above.
