Giving Back
Raven Reads believes in giving back to the community.
Our inaugural box in October 2017, featured Seven Fallen Feathers, a novel by Tanya Talaga, that featured the tragic stories of seven Indigenous youth from northern Ontario. The seven were hundreds of miles away from their families, forced to leave home and live in a foreign and unwelcoming city. Five were found dead in the rivers surrounding Lake Superior.
In 2018, Raven Reads will be donating $1 from each box sold back to the First Nations Caring Society. The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society is a non-profit organization that works with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people of all ages and organizations to ensure First Nations children and young people have the same opportunities as others to grow up safely at home, be healthy, and achieve their dreams.
In addition, a portion of the over 100 copies of Seven Fallen Feathers that we purchased in October will go to the Dennis Franklin Cromarty Memorial Fund, set up in 1994 to financially assist Nishnawbe Aski Nation students’ studies in Thunder Bay and at post-secondary institutions.
