Raven Reads is a subscription box service that delivers custom curated books and giftware written or created by Indigenous peoples from around the world to your doorstep each season.

We are 100% Indigenous owned and operated.

Every adult box contains a carefully curated book written by an Indigenous author, a letter from the author or box curator, a written story or teaching from or about one of many Indigenous cultures from around the world, and two to three gift-like items from Indigenous entrepreneurs. We spend many weeks carefully researching books and products from Indigenous artists and entrepreneurs around the globe!

Our children's boxes include 2 – 3 children books appropriate for ages 4 to 7. We often will include other bookish items for the kids like buttons, colouring sheets, stickers and puzzles. We also include book diary cards for you and the children to journal their review of each book!


Nicole McLaren is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Raven Reads. She is of mixed Métis, Cree and European ancestry and she is a member of the Métis Nation of British Columbia. Nicole's family comes from Saskatchewan where she spent just over 10 years going to school and where she started her career and family.

There are two (2) collections to choose from and three (3) different payment plans to choose from.

Subscribers first choose the adult box or the children's box.

For our adult box: Seasonal plans are $88.49, and you are billed every three (3) months. Pre-paid bi-annual plans are $173.20 per season, and you pay for two (2) deliveries upfront. Pre-paid annual plans are $341.36 plus shipping per season, and you pay for four (4) deliveries upfront.

For our children’s box: Seasonal plans are $70.49, and you are billed every three (3) months. Pre-paid bi-annual plans are $133.99, and you pay for two (2) deliveries upfront. Pre-paid annual plans are $261.99, and you pay for four (4) deliveries upfront.

All plans and shipping costs are in Canadian dollars. If you live outside of Canada, your bank will automatically convert the charge into your local currency. Exchange rates may apply.

Shipping within Canada is free. For international orders outside of Canada, there is a $5 CAD flat fee per box.

For example, if you order an annual subscription for 4 boxes, international orders will pay $20 CAD.

We ship our subscription boxes every quarter or season. Typically we aim to ship our boxes at the end of January, April, July and October; however, exact shipping dates cannot be guarenteed at this time.

The novels we include in our Adult boxes are categorized as Adult, and as such are recommended for ages 18 and up. It largely depends on the maturity level of the reader however some of our adult books do include triggering or sensitive content and violence due to the nature of our books.

Some children younger than 18 would probably love Raven Reads and the books we select.

For younger children we recommend our Raven Reads Jr. box which is for ages 9 and under.

The cut-off date to receive a box with a new subscription is the 15th of the month before the box is to be shipped.  For example, if you want to get April's box, you need to place your order before March 15th. If you order after March 15th, your first box will be the July box. You will still receive 4 boxes with an annual subscription, 2 with the bi-annual subscription, etc.

If this is your first time signing up, you will be billed immediately for your first subscription. After that, you will be billed on the 1st of the month for your next cycle.

We ship boxes every January, April, July and October. If your subscription is due to renew, payment will be processed on the 1st of that shipping month.

To submit your products for consideration in one of our future boxes please send us an email at submissions@ravenreads.org You must be willing to send us a sample of the items you would like us to review. Please note that due to the volume of inquiries we receive we may not be able to respond to every inquiry.

Raven Reads sources new release fictional novels and children books written or illustrated by Indigenous authors and illustrators. We typically work directly with publishers and prefer to feature books that are a new release. If you would like to send an advanced reading copy or sample of your book please contact us at submissions@ravenreads.org or have your publisher reach out to us.

Billing & Renewals

When you sign up to Raven Reads you will be charged immediately for the subscription model you have chosen (seasonal, bi-annual, or annual). Once your subscription cycle is over, you will be re-billed for the same cycle until you decide to switch to a different plan or cancel your subscription.

We ship boxes every January, April, July and October. If your subscription is due to renew, payment will be processed on the 1st of that shipping month.

Seasonal plans: Renewals take place on the 1st of each season (e.g. shipping month). You will be charged for one delivery, unless you have changed your plan. For example, if you purchase a seasonal subscription on May 15, your first box shipped will be the July box. Your next renewal charge will be October 1.

Bi-annual plans: Renewals take place on the 1st of the shipping month every 6 months, for the delivery of 2 boxes. You will be charged again after another 6 months, unless you have changed your plan. For example, if you purchased a bi-annual subscription (2 boxes) on June 12th, your first box shipped will be the July box and your second box will be the October box. Your bi-annual subscription will renewal the following January 1.

Annual plans: Renewals take place on the 1st of the month once a year for the delivery of 4 boxes. You will be charged again every year, unless you have changed your plan. For example, if you purchased an annual subscription (4 boxes) on August 5th, your first box shipped will be the October box, your second box will be the January box, your third box will be the April box, and your fourth box will be the July box. Your annual subscription will renewal the following October 1.

**NOTE** If you are ordering bi-annual or annual packages please note that you will be charged 2 or 4 times the shipping rate to account for multiple shipments.

Address Changes

If you are expecting to receive your first box, or you are changing your address during a shipping month (January, April, July, October), please contact support@ravenreads.org BEFORE you recieve your shipping notification and we will make the change for you.

If you have received more than one box in the past, and are a recurring subscriber, you can sign into your account and select “Manage Subscriptions” and then update your old shipping address to the new one and click save. You can also update your billing address here.

If you’re unsure, you can also email support@ravenreads.org to verify the change was completed correctly.

Cancellation

To cancel your subscription before it renews, please visit your account page to log into your account. Here you can easily cancel or skip before the next renewal occurs. Click here for a more detailed guide on how to cancel your subscriptions on your account page.

If you have a prepaid account and you cancel your account before receiving your remaining boxes, you will not be refunded for those remaining boxes. We will continue to send you the boxes unless you have directed us not to do so.

For example:
You purchased an annual subscription (4 boxes) and have so far received one (1) box. If you cancel your subscription you will not be refunded the remaining 3 boxes. We will continue to send you those 3 boxes at the appropriate time.

Return policy

Things of note to remember when deciding to order a Raven Reads subscription/gift:

If your account has renewed (your card has been charged) and you do not wish to receive the box(es) that you've paid for, please contact support@ravenreads.org as soon as possible to let us know.

We are happy to give refunds for unshipped boxes, but once a box has shipped we cannot give refunds.

We do not offer refunds if you receive a book/item that you are not interested in. If that happens, we hope you have a friend whom you can gift the item to!

Keep an eye on our social media accounts, as well as our newsletter, as we announce upcoming themes and give hints as to what you can expect from each box. This can help you decide whether or not to skip a box if it doesn't interest you.

We cannot accept returns, regardless of whether the box has been opened or not.

If you receive a damaged item, please send us a photo of the damage to support@ravenreads.org and we will be happy to ship you a replacement!

If our shipper (Canada Post) indicates that they have delivered the box but the box cannot be found, we are unable to assist with this. Please contact Canada Post to begin a trace using your shipping information sent to your email when your box ships. Canada Post may leave boxes on the front door step of your home and we cannot be responsible should the box be stolen. If a claim is required, then Canada Post may direct us to become involved in which we are happy to file a claim in the event Canada Post is likely at fault for the missing package.
